1858 The Headless Horseman Pursuing Ichabod Crane by John Quidor
In the Sleepy Hollow story, the headless killer is a Hessian mercenary soldier. In the 18th century the British army contracted Hessians for military services. Their mission was to combat in many battles including the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783). The Hessian name is based off the German state (stadt), Hesse-Kassel.
