Mary Ann Conklin (1821-1873) was a shrewish madam who cursed like an Irish sailor in several languages. She ran the Felker house in Seattle, a brothel that serviced sailors and lumberjacks. She built a strong no-nonsense reputation. Once one of her customers asked for a receipt and she answered by flinging hot firewood his way.
